What Is Royalty Leakage in Music?

Royalty leakage is money your catalog earns but never receives. Here is where it comes from, and why it is a data problem before it is a money problem.

Royalty leakage is the gap between what your catalog earned and what actually reached your bank account. The music was used, a payment was probably due, and somewhere between the usage and the statement the money stopped moving.

It is rarely theft. Leakage is usually the by-product of a supply chain where usage is logged by one party, rights are held by another, and payment is calculated by a third — each working from a different copy of the truth.

Where leakage comes from

  • Unidentified usage: a broadcast or stream is logged, but the recording is never matched to a known work.
  • Unreported usage: the usage happens but never enters a reporting system at all, which is common in smaller territories and secondary broadcasters.
  • Ownership conflicts: two parties claim overlapping shares, so the money sits in suspense instead of being distributed.
  • Identifier gaps: a missing or duplicated ISRC or ISWC breaks the link between a recording, a composition and its owners.
  • Metadata drift: writer names, publisher names and territory codes that do not match across systems.

Why it compounds

A single mismatched identifier does not cost much. The same mismatch repeated across ten thousand usages a year, in five territories, for three years, becomes a material number — and because nobody receives an invoice for money they never knew existed, nothing forces the error to surface.

How to find it

The method is always the same in principle: build a clean picture of what you own, detect where the music appears, match detections against the catalog and ownership data, then compare the result against the statements you actually received. Every difference is a question worth asking.

What you get at the end is a list of potential opportunities with evidence attached, not a cheque. Whether any given item converts into revenue depends on rights ownership, reporting rules, territory and the organization on the other side of the claim.
